MBI5359

48-Channel PWM Constant Current LED Driver with Embedded Power Switch for 1:32 Time-multiplexing Applications

MBI5359 is an advanced LED driver with whole new high integration architecture, which is built by 48 constant current output channels and 32 power switches packed into a compact BGA package. This provides the simplicities and modularity of the driver scheme design.

MBI5359 is designed for LED video display applications using internal Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control with selectable 16 /15 /14 / 13-bit color depth. MBI5359 features a 48-bit shift register which converts serial input data into each pixel’s gray scale of the output port. The forty-eight regulated current ports are designed to provide uniform and constant current sinks for driving LEDs with a wide range of VF variations. The output current can be preset through an external resistor. The innovative architecture with embedded SRAM is designed to support up to 1:32 time-multiplexing applications. Users only need to send the whole frame data once and to store in the embedded SRAM of the LED driver, instead of sending every time when the scan line is changed. It helps to save the data bandwidth and to achieve high grayscale with very low data clock rate. With scan-type Scrambled-PWM (S-PWM) technology, MBI5359 enhances PWM by scrambling the “on” time of each scan line into several “on” periods and sequentially drives each scan line for a short “on” period. The enhancement equivalently increases the visual refresh rate of scan-type LED displays.

MBI5359 drives the corresponding LEDs to the brightness specified by image data. With MBI5359, all output channels can be built with 16-bit color depth (65,536 gray scales), even in high time-multiplexing driving scheme design. When building a 16-bit color depth video, S-PWM technology reduces the flickers and improves the image fidelity.

A whole new control interface adoption in MBI5359 allows less control signals between controller and driver chips, and this improves the reliabilities since the wire connections are simplified

Through compulsory/in-message error detection with variety, MBI5359 detects individual LED for open-circuit/short-circuit/pixel short errors without extra components. Also, the bi-directional data transmission eases the implementation of the error status read back. MBI5359 equips an innovative cross/bright line elimination function, and it solves the cross/bright line phenomenon induced by failure LEDs. Moreover, a patented technology to foreknowledge the LED failure is built-in to improve the reliabilities of the LEDs, so called “LED failure prediction”.

To further reduce power consumption of LED display, a smart power saving mode with multiple ways will reduce driver IC power consumption dynamically either SDI data are all zero or non-zero. No matter the LED display is playing video content or in stand-by mode, the power consumption can be much reduced.
