Macroblock collaborates with ITRI to develop micro-LED digital display technology

Macroblock and ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute) commit to developing “ultra fine pitch LED digital display technology”. Through this collaboration, Macroblock may shorten their micro-LED driver IC development schedule, and also assist customers when applying micro-LED to their products.

According to LEDinside 2017 report, base on the assumption of replacing all the LCD components with micro-LED, micro-LED’s market potential may reach US$ 30~40 billion. Also, the LEDinside 2016 report estimates that the market value for LED display will be around US$ 5 billion in 2020, and the market size for fine pitch LED display will be around US$ 1.35 billion. Transparency Market Research estimates that the market size for fine pitch LED will be US$ 3.1 billion by the year 2024, and both of the researches emphasize the growth trend for the fine pitch LED display market.

Macroblock launched the first fine pitch LED display driver IC in 2014. Without a doubt, the fine pitch LED display market has both grown and matured, and P2.5 LED displays have also become the most common products. However, in order to realize the full potential of ultra fine pitch LED display, LED display manufacturers need to have better R&D capabilities, and the value chain suppliers should have solutions for it, too. Macroblock Chairman Dr. L. C. Yang says: “ the LED display manufacturers have already confronted technology and cost bottlenecks to produce.

The micro-LED display has high resolution and baseless features. Therefore, it is very suitable for indoor advertisement applications, such as retail and boutique stores. Macroblock General Manager, Robert Chen mentions " With the exception of Sony’s solution, there is no micro-LED module in the market. Macroblock is the leading company for LED driver IC, and it needs to take advantage of this market trend and speed up the development of driver ICs."By doing this, Macroblock can own the key technology for developing micro-LED driver ICs and accelerate the launch of our product."

ITRI Electronic and Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories Director, Dr. Chih-I Wu explains " micro-LED is a self-emitting display technology that makes LED structures thinner, smaller, and in an array structure. Compared to LEDs, the advantages of micro-LEDs include lower power consumption, higher brightness, higher resolution, better color saturation, faster response time, higher efficiency, super power saving and longer life time. Therefore, micro-LED becomes the center of attention in display technology.

ITRI Director Wu points out that the key technology for its micro-LED product is" Mass Transfer" which can decrease production costs and upgrade display resolution. Under Ministry of Economic Affair’s long-term support, ITRI has been developing this technology since 2009 and therefore earns a lot of experience about the manufacturing process. This is very helpful for the micro-LED driver IC development.

Macroblock looks forward to collaborating with ITRI and bringing their cutting edge influence to the LED display industry.
