MBI5352Q

48-Channel PWM Constant Current LED Driver for 1:32 Time-Multiplexing Applications

MBI5352Q is designed for automotive-grade dynamic LED graphic applications and features internal Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control with selectable 16/15/14/13-bit color depth. The MBI5352Q includes a 48-bit shift register that converts serial input data into the grayscale for each pixel at the output port. Its forty-eight regulated current ports are designed to provide uniform and constant current sinks, allowing it to drive LEDs with a wide range of forward voltage (VF) variations. The output current can be preset using an external resistor.

This innovative architecture and embedded SRAM support up to 1:32 time-multiplexing applications. Users only need to send the entire frame data once and store it in the embedded SRAM of the LED driver, rather than resending data each time the scan line changes. This approach helps save data bandwidth while achieving high grayscale with a very low data clock rate.

With scan-type Scrambled-PWM (S-PWM) technology, the MBI5352Q enhances PWM by scrambling the “on” time of each scan line into several “on” periods, sequentially driving each scan line for a short “on” duration. This enhancement effectively increases the visual refresh rate of scan-type LED displays. Additionally, the innovative GCLK multiplier technique further doubles the visual refresh rate.

The MBI5352Q drives the corresponding LEDs to achieve the brightness specified by the image data. With the MBI5352Q, all output channels can support 16-bit color depth (65,536 gray scales). When creating 16-bit color depth video, S-PWM technology reduces flicker and improves image fidelity.

Through compulsory error detection, the MBI5352Q can identify individual LEDs with open-circuit errors without needing extra components. It also features an innovative cross-elimination function to address the cross phenomenon caused by failed LEDs. Furthermore, the integrated ghost elimination circuit alleviates ghosting issues. To further reduce the LED display's power consumption, a built-in smart power-saving mode shuts down the driver IC when the grayscale data is zero.
