With mini-LED/micro-LED continue being two of the hottest topics of discussion within the display industry, many people have flocked to Taipei Nangang Exhibition Hall to attend the three-day Display International (Touch Taiwan 2018) exhibition from the 28th to the 31st August 2018. Among the crowd that attended the event, a significant number of guests—both new and long-term partners of Macroblock—have come forward to our booth to learn more about our mini-LED and HDR-Optimized solution.

HDR-Optimized: Letting Displays Come to Life with MBI5359(Fig. 2)
Inspired by the fact that cinema will be the primary targeted market for indoor LED displays, we went after a theatrical appearance for our booth at this event. However, it will be challenging to drive this concept across without models of LED displays meeting the high standards required by indoor cinema application, which is why we demonstrated display cabinets comparing HDR-Optimized driven by our MBI5359 to SDR. By comparing
“HDR-Optimized (input: HDR (10-bit); output: 16-bit@4KHz)” to “General Display Spec. (input: SDR (8-bit); output: 14-bit@4KHz),” we can tell apart which has an enhanced visual quality and one that closely resembles to what we see in real life right away. As of now, there is no definite HDR standard in the LED display industry. VESA Certified Display HDR and Ultra™ Premium have defined HDR standard as one that has a contrast ratio greater than 20,000:1. With our HDR-Optimized, we have a contrast ratio greater than 25,000:1, meaning we can show the same dynamic range seen through human eyes with increased image brightness, adjusted darkness, enhanced contrast between light and dark regions, and most importantly, adding that natural touch to our image, allowing us to be fully immersed in what we see on screen.

Mini-LED: HDR 10, BT.2020, and the Mass Production of mini-LED in 2019 Q1(Fig. 3)
Compared to LCD monitors, the current standard HDR technology for 4K displays is HDR 10—a specification set by CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) in 2015. mini-LED displays using MBI5359 can support a display quality of 16-bit grayscale, a contrast ratio as high as 25,500:1, a wide color gamut of 84% of BT.2020, as well as an image with rich and vivid colors, all of which add up to making our current display one with a quality closest to HDR 10 in the industry. In addition, a mini-LED display designed using MBI5359 has a viewing angle of up to 178° with a seamless free-form design (currently, it can be built into a 130-inch seamless 4K display). This is an exciting and necessary breakthrough in order to approach the lucrative indoor LED display market which includes cinema, indoor digital signage, and commercial applications.
Since last year, Macroblock has been gradually and relentlessly advancing into the mini/micro-LED industry. From Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) in February this year to Infocomm China in April, to Infocomm Las Vegas, to our annual Macroblock LED Display Conference, and finally to this very exhibition, Touch Taiwan 2018, we have watched our mini-LED cabinet grown from a mere 30x30cm in size to a 60x30cm cabinet with a significant decrease in the number of dead pixels. According to our micro-LED Product Manager, Kerry Huang, “Production yield is no longer a challenge. With our driver ICs which are designed to support mini-LED, and with our collaboration with many international manufacturers of audio visual equipment, we are optimistic that by the first quarter in 2019, we should be able to welcome the complete mini-LED solution.”
